BeagleBone Black has a huge open source community. To be effective at using the Bone you need to learn how work with the community. The purpose of this exercise is to introduce you some of the Bone communities.

There are two sets of exercises here, one for students taking my class at Rose-Hulman, the other for workshop participants. Pick the one that applies to you.

For Rose Students

eLinux.org

eLinux.org is where this page is posted. It's also where I've posted all the class exercises. I tag all my pages with [[Category:ECE597]] so it's easy to find all my pages here Category:ECE597. Bookmark it, you'll use it a lot.

  1. Create a user name on eLinux.org
  2. Add your name to the EBC_Contributions_and_Project_Status#Fall_2015 page. No need to add to the Project Status section at this time.
  3. Edit your User page on eLinux and add
    [[Category:ECE597 |Ux]]
to it, where x is the first initial of your last name. This will make it appear on the Category page under U sorted by last name. Check out User:Mayhewsw for ideas of what else to put on your User page.
  4. Add you name to EBC Editing a Wiki.

BeagleBoard.org

BeagleBoard.org is the "official" BeagleBoard site, you'll find lots of good information here.

Check out the FAQ. It has some good suggestions on where to find information.

BeagleBoard Google Group

There is a Google Group for the BeagleBoard. This is where I go for most of my information, it's easy to search for past information and members are quick to post answers to questions. Try it,

  1. search for something like cloud9 and see what you find
  2. subscribe to the group
  3. signup for email updates by clicking on My membership. I like using the daily digest.
  4. post a response to my message

You'll also find an ECE597 BeagleBoard group. I set it up just for our class.

  1. subscribe to the group
  2. signup for email updates. I like send each message as it arrives for this group.
  3. post a response to my message

IRC

There's also an [1] for the Beagle. It's a good place to get really quick answers since there is usually someone monitoring the channel the knows the Beagle.

  1. Go to the channel and post something.
