The section on how to connect the 3 pin FTDI cable to the BBB have the colours of the RX and TX cables swapped. See http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_TTL-232R_RPi.pdf page 7. Confirmed on my BBB.
